Global professional services firm EY (Ernst & Young) has disclosed a cybersecurity incident that exposed sensitive client tax information after attackers gained unauthorized access.

The breach occurred over several weeks before suspicious activity was detected, giving cybercriminals valuable time to access and download confidential documents.

The compromised files reportedly contained financial information and personal data used in tax preparation for some of EY's institutional clients. Although the company has stated that there is currently no evidence the stolen information has been misused or that individuals were specifically targeted, the incident underscores how damaging even a single weakness in an organization's technology ecosystem can be.

Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting helpdesk and IT service management platforms because support tickets often include sensitive documents and customer information. If these third-party systems are not adequately secured, they can become an attractive gateway into an organization's most valuable data.
