Telegram Troubles?
Telegram is facing increasing legal scrutiny as South Korea has launched a probe into the messaging platform, following similar legal challenges in France.
South Korean authorities are investigating Telegram’s role in spreading illicit deepfake pornography, a crime that disproportionately targets young women in the country.
This investigation adds to the mounting legal troubles for Telegram, whose CEO Pavel Durov was recently arrested in France over allegations that the platform facilitated criminal activities such as organised crime, drug trafficking, and the distribution of explicit content involving minors.
The situation in South Korea mirrors the French probe, where Durov was accused of failing to prevent illegal activity on Telegram. The South Korean police are working with international partners, including French authorities, to further investigate Telegram’s involvement in cybercrime.
The ongoing investigations could damage Telegram’s reputation, with users and privacy advocates expressing concerns about the platform’s role in enabling criminal activities while balancing its defense of free expression and user privacy.
