GMAIL gets a blue tic for mobile email security

by | Sep 25, 2024

Google has introduced blue verification checkmarks for Gmail users on iOS and Android, significantly boosting email security.

This new feature is part of Google’s ongoing effort to safeguard users from phishing attacks and email fraud. Previously available only on the web, the blue checkmarks are now rolling out to mobile platforms, allowing users to quickly verify the authenticity of emails even while on the go.

This security enhancement is built on the Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) initiative. With BIMI, brands can display their verified logos next to their email sender name. To display the blue checkmark, brands must have a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC), ensuring that the email is truly from the organisation it claims to represent.

The key benefits of this new feature include:

  1. Enhanced Email Security: The checkmarks help users easily identify trusted senders, reducing the risk of phishing.
  2. Brand Authentication: Organizations can confirm their identity through BIMI and VMC, adding a layer of trust to their emails.
  3. Improved User Confidence: By highlighting verified senders, Gmail helps users distinguish between legitimate emails and potential threats.
  4. Support for Smaller Organizations: Gmail also offers a Common Mark Certificate (CMC) for smaller businesses without a registered trademark. Though these organizations can display their logos, they won’t receive the blue verification checkmark.
  5. Mobile Usability: The blue checkmarks now appear on mobile devices, ensuring users are protected no matter where they check their emails.

This rollout is a critical step toward improving email safety and will be fully available to Gmail users within a few weeks.
