Giving up the Ghost

by | Oct 3, 2024

In a global operation, authorities dismantled the Ghost cybercrime platform, leading to 51 arrests across multiple countries. Ghost, an encrypted communication platform, was notorious for enabling drug trafficking, money laundering, and other criminal activities.

Criminals used customised devices to access the platform, which provided them a secure way to communicate and coordinate illegal operations.

This takedown involved collaboration between law enforcement agencies from nine countries, including Australia, Canada, and the United States.

Europol, leading the charge, emphasised that no criminal network could escape international cooperation. The operation also resulted in the seizure of drugs, weapons, and over €1 million in cash.

Authorities expect more arrests as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, in Australia, a suspected mastermind behind Ghost’s creation has been arrested.

Investigators have also confiscated cryptocurrency worth AUD 9 million linked to the platform’s operations.
